The Story

Right now, families that are in refugee camps in Sudan are given about thirty pounds of sorghum and oil as their food allotment for the month. Take a closer look at the situation, and you will find that many of the families, especially single mothers are unable to put this provision to use.

Imagine you are in this situation: You are a single mother. You and thousands of others have been forced to flee your homeland. All you have to survive is what you were able to gather while fleeing, what others provide to you, and what you can scavenge. While grateful for the provision, you would find that the food you are given is inadequate in its nutritional value especially for your children who suffer from acute malnutrition. Not only is the sorghum insufficient in its nutritional value, but refugees do not have the tools to cook it, rendering the rations useless. As a result hunger is unavoidable.

What Will Your $1 A Day Do?

The situation in the refugee camps is devastating, as numerous children are severely malnourished. One dollar a day, or thirty dollars a month, would give families, especially single parent families, income to supplement the sorghum. They will be able to buy high-protein foods like eggs, as well as purchase essentials such as soap and wood to cook.

For children to have healthy growing bodies, they need diversified food that is rich in protein, carbohydrates, and other nutrients. The children in the refugee camp are not getting food that meets the nutritional requirements for them to be healthy. Your gift would help ensure their chance to live and combat severe acute malnutrition (SAM), childhood disease, and trauma.

Breaking The Cycle

You can imagine the pain those of us in the diaspora feel as we watch our families and people yet again suffer through devastating war in Ethiopia. HPN4Tigray’s commitment to alleviating the suffering of children in refugee camps stems from our shared experience of loss. Members of our team were once children living in refugee camps in Sudan, after being displaced by a 17 year war. While we work with urgency to break the vicious cycle of war and forced famine, we urge you to join our team. Be the one by giving one! A gift of $1 a day can truly save a child!
